Year 4 have been learning about the three States of Matter and how the particles change when in each state. Today we looked at an ice cube, a candle and chocolate and tried to identify what they all had in common. We learned about freezing and melting points and followed this with an investigation to find out if a chocolate button would melt faster in the mouth or a hand. Some predicted the hand because of sweaty palms! Others said the mouth as your mouth has a warm tongue in it as well as warm saliva. We timed the results.
We found out that the chocolate button melted quicker in the mouth. It took about a minute.
Finally we compared this with melting the chocolate using a candle. Again it took a minute to melt. We were also able to closely observe how wax melts and how it changes colour. The lesson got a thumbs up!
