‘Giraffe’s can’t Dance’

Year 2 listened to the story ‘Giraffe’s can’t Dance’ and talked about how Gerald might be feeling in the book and how everyone has different talents.  The class then had a circle time, sharing what made each of us unique or what they considered to be their strengths.  We then continued our discussion taking about what we find challenging and how everyone in the class has different strengths and weaknesses. The class then all decorated a mini-me which are displayed proudly on our classroom door to show we may all be unique but together we are a team! The children decided they wanted to mini-me’s to be holding hands to show their unity as a class.

Pirate day was a fantastic success and we had so much fun!

We enjoyed learning more about pirates and experiencing life aboard a pirate ship.  We started the day by singing a sea shanty to get us in the pirate mood.  We then acted out pirate duties such as being look out, sorting the ropes and moving heavy canon balls. In between duties we had to sleep in the smelly lower deck (under the tables) and gathered some fantastic language to use in our upcoming English writing. We also tried sea biscuits and decided that it would get rather boring eating them all day everyday. Miss Sutherland even zoomed us from her pirate ship and we told her all about our exciting adventure.

This week we have started our pirate writing and I have been amazed by the rich language the class are using, I can’t wait to share the finished results!

Year 2 Art

In Art, Year 2, have started to learn about the sculptor Barbara Hepworth. We explored her work and noticed she often made large sculptures with holes in the middle.  We talked about what we liked and disliked about her work.  We realised we could all ‘see’ different things when we looked at her artwork – varying from a moon, a dad with a child to a totem pole!

Finally we explored how to make our own sculpture with playdoh. It was harder than we first thought to make a stable structure! We can’t wait to design and make our own sculptures.

Year 2 English

This term in English we are exploring the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. We have sorted books based on their characteristics: front cover, pictures, what the pages look like inside and whether the books have a contents page or glossary!

Year 2 are using a text about pirates to help us learn about non-fiction writing. We each looked at a non-fiction page from a book and found all the features that show us it’s a page of ‘facts’ – who knew there were so many clues on one page! We ended the week by starting to map our own Pirate writing, thinking about sub-headings and wow facts.

Year 2 Maths and Computing

Today we learnt about collecting data and using pictograms. First we made some pictograms using paper, scissors and glue. Then we used the computers to make a pictogram.  We decided that pictograms were a good way to show information.

Year 2 Christmas Dinner

Year 2 really enjoyed their Christmas dinner today and afterwards the sun was shining so we could run around outside. Thank you to our lovely cooks and lunchtime staff for all of their hard work.

Christmas Nativity – YR, Y1 & Y2

Reception, Year One and Year Two did two fantastic performances outside today for their Christmas Nativity play. Fortunately, the weather was warm and everybody enjoyed the performance. Thank you to all the parents who provided costumes and who came to the performances.

Year 2 – Design and Technology and Maths

Year 2 have been busy designing and making some Christmas boxes. We had to design a cube shape so needed to make a net first and then include some flaps for sticking. We had to use our Maths skills as well and remember what we learnt about 3D shapes a few weeks ago. We are wondering if anything is going to be put in our Christmas boxes before the end of term.
