The year 2 children have been investigating how to create sculptures within art and today put their skills to good use by starting to create some 3D masks using twigs, masking tape and tissue paper. They showed exceptional care and perseverance as this was not an easy task. But they stuck at it and adapted their creations to ensure that they were strong and sturdy.
Year 2
New Gallery Opening Soon – artists needed!
Our school is excited to be opening a new gallery in the entrance hall and is looking for work from up and coming artists!
The new gallery will be showing work chosen, or created, by the children in our school.
The only catch is that the gallery is very very small – in fact it is in a dolls house!
Mrs Cairns has provided some templates for children to use, but can also use her special magic to shrink any work down to the right size if necessary.
Children can exhibit any type of art that they wish. There is space for sculpture as well as 2D creations.
Year 2 DT – Sewing Keyrings
The children have worked extremely hard designing, planning and sewing their keyrings. They learnt how to sew a running stitch to join together two pieces of felt, stuffed them and then attached the ribbon, keyring and decorated it. After they had finished, they evaluated their final product reflecting on the process they followed to make them. For most of the class, this was the first time they had ever sewn and they all did a fantastic job.
Well Done Year 2.
NSPCC Assembly and Activity
Recently we worked in our Key Stages to learn what the NSPCC do and how we can talk to trusted adults in our lives to help us ‘Speak Out’ when we need to. We then explored the NSPCC website, and KS1 thought of their ‘happy places’ and KS2 made fortune tellers containing information about the NSPCC and Childline.
World Book Day Assembly
Year 6 led a World Book Day assembly as they shared their thoughts on reading. They talked about their favourite genres, that they borrow books from the public library or they buy books online and how they read to escape into different worlds and to ‘grow their mind’. Having lwritten their persuasive speeches last week, they used their powers of persuasion to encourage the younger children to read. Well done to Riley who confidently played his Grade 1 piano pieces for classes to come in to. All in all Year 6 did really well. I was proud of them.
World Book Day in Year 2
Year 2 have made such an effort to come in as their favourite book character and all look fabulous. They have enjoyed talking about their favourite books, drawing book covers and writing about why they love books.
Shapes and Gymnastics
This half term, the children are learning about shape in mathematics. They have been making 2D shapes using geoboards which all thoroughly enjoyed. I was impressed with the range of shapes they were able to make and name by counting the number of sides and vertices it had.
In gymnastics, children have been exploring different jumps using a wide range of apparatus.
Art Exhibition
Year 2 ended their Sculpture unit by holding an Art Exhibition. The children had worked hard exploring architecture this half term and then created their own buildings thinking carefully about the purpose and design of the building. They did a marvellous job at speaking about their designs using appropriate vocabulary and the visiting classes asked some thought provoking questions. It was such a lovely way to end the half-term.
Well Done Year 2.
Y2 Mathematics and Music
The children have continued to explore division and multiplication again this week in Mathematics and have made so much progress. They’re all now writing division and multiplication calculations to represent arrays and problems. They’re practising their multiplication and division facts for the 2,5 and 10 times tables using numicon, multi-link, number lines and hundred squares. They’re remembering lots of division and multiplication vocabulary as well and using it correctly.
In Music, Y2 were very excited as they got to play different untuned percussion instruments alongside the song we’re learning. Some children were excellent at making sure everyone stayed in time with the song as well.
I’m so proud of how hard they’ve worked this week.
