BELIEVE, ACHIEVE, BELONG

Computers Year 2

Year 2 have been working really hard with their direction work. To begin with we gave directions to each other. Then we used the beebots and a program on the i-pads to give directions. We had to really concentrate when turning the beebot and using our right and left turns. We also had to work together and share ideas.

Campfire and S’mores

Yesterday we enjoyed our long awaited campfire.  The children first learnt about the fire triangle including the 3 components needed for a fire: fuel, oxygen and ignition. We also talked about how to stop a fire safely including water, fire blanket or removing fuel.

The class then collected spaghetti and sausage sized sticks to feed our fire.  We built the fire together before all having a chance to use the flint and steel to make sparks.  When the fire was hot enough we then roasted our own marshmallows which were delicious!

Art and DT in Year 2

I have been so amazed with the art and DT Year 2 are producing at the moment.

We enjoyed finishing off our shields we have made in DT. We designed our own family crests to represent ourselves and cut the embellishments independently. We then added specific colours because they depicted power, courage, or greatness. Each child chose the shape of their shield and could add any details they wished. I think you will agree the results are fantastic!

In Art this term we have started learning about the Kenyan artist Kevin Bulinya. We have talked about what we like or dislike about his art and attempted to copy some of his drawings.

Summer Term Week 2 Activities

Wow! Year 2 have started back with a great attitude to learning and curiosity surrounding our new topics.

In Maths we starting learning about capacity, exploring the terms full, empty and refreshing our fractions knowledge to talk about half empty. We enjoyed lots of practical lessons and conducted a fantastic experiment to see which everyday container has the greatest capacity.

In Geography we are comparing Kenya and the UK. The children are fascinated by Kenya, the differences in seasons, temperature and construction of houses. We sorted photographs to decide if they are were photos of the UK or Kenya – many children were surprised to discover that Kenya had cars or blocks of flats! We have also learnt where Kenya is located and can find it on a globe and in atlases.

Year 2 Mud Pies and Minibeasts

After a busy week of learning we really enjoyed digging and playing in the mud! We worked beautifully together, showing fantastic teamwork and communication skills.

Year 2 Visit Amazona Zoo

Year 2 had the most fantastic day at the zoo. All the class were fantastic role models for Stibbard, and were complemented on their behaviour and manners. The children were fascinated by the animals, they loved reading the information plaques and applying their animal kingdom knowledge throughout the day.

Maths in Year 2

In year 2 this week we have been learning about position and direction.  We have enjoyed lots of practical lessons to really understand our new acquired knowledge. We spent one lesson in the playground, making an obstacle course before directing our partner ‘robot’ around the course. Our partner could only move exactly as we directed so we initially had to make lots of corrections to our instructions. We also directed a beebot around a grid of pirates, working out the code we needed to write to reach our destination.  We then learnt out how to translate our code into written form.
