Year 5 Autumn Week 6

This week in Year 5 we had 4 children who were taken to a rugby tournament to play lots of games involving rugby. We are excited to see our parents this Thursday to show our work and finished products of Land of Roar maps.

Year 5 Autumn Week 5

In Year 5 this week in English we are learning about Nelson Mandela and how he tried to stop racism and was willing to die to stop it. In Maths we had an addition and subtraction treasure hunt where there were questions scattered outside and you would have to find them, answer it, then it would give you a clue to the next one.

Open the Book Daniel and the Lion’s Den

This morning we had the whole school listening to the story of Daniel and the Lion’s Den told by our great friends from Open the Book.

We really enjoyed learning about the courage shown by Daniel and how the King accepted that Daniel could pray and worship his own God to be saved from the lions.

Well done to the Year 4 and 5 boys who became jailers and Lions!

Year 5 Autumn Week 4

In Year 5 in Art this week we made letters and names out of screws and bolts and stuff like that and we then had a go at drawing what we made in our sketchbooks. We also finished writing our stories in English which was about a child and their puppy that gives them a new friendship.

Year 5 Autumn Week 3

This week in Year 5 we had a nice lady come in and teach PE – we had lots of fun playing with the gymnastic equipment. In Science we made boats out of tin foil – we put it in water and tested how many marbles it could hold before sinking.

Year 5 Autumn Week 2

In Year 5 this week we had lots of fun drawing maps from our class story The Land of Roar. We also looked at different parts of a flower in Science. We hope everyone got to see Her Majesty the Queen’s funeral. I hope no one is too sad.

Making CAM toys in Year Five: Design Technology

Over the past few weeks, Year Five have been designing and making moving toys that use CAM mechanisms. They have had to think hard for themselves and really persevere to overcome problems as they arise. The Year Fives have worked so well as a team to support each other with the making process and have learned the importance of talking through their engineering problems with each other to help them find solutions. Their cutting, sawing and joining skills have been really precise and the children have understood the importance of measuring twice before they cut in order to avoid mistakes.

Year Five were able to take home their completed CAM toys today. They should be really proud of the completed results. Well done!

Year 1 and Year 5 water games

After a hot week, the children cooled off with some water games. They all enjoyed water run games, duck duck splash, water balloon volleyball, water fighting and using the sprinkler. All the teachers got very wet – thanks to some of the children!

Year 5 Moving Up Day

Year 5 were challenged to make the highest free standing structure using a length of masking tape, 10 pieces of dry uncooked spaghetti and one marshmallow. They had 30 minutes to complete it. The cooperation in the pairs was great and they soon realised that a wide base would be the best. The winners won by just half a cm at 73 cm high. Well done Year 5!  I look forward to seeing you in Year 6 in September.
