Reading in Year 6

Year 6 have settled back with enthusiasm and energy. They were clearly pleased to get back to see their friends and be the oldest in the school. This week we have had lots of discussion about the last five months – the things they lost and gained and their feelings through that time. They were open and mature and I gave them freedom to talk and share.

Our new reading corner is full of recent modern fiction as well as classics, non fiction and back copies of annuals read and reread by my children now recycled for my class to enjoy. There are books promoted with a photo of the author and a synopsis of the story.  Like last year, I expect the children to have a book they are reading in school every day as we have daily quiet reading time. They can choose a book from the class reading corner, the school library or they can bring a book from home. The website Lovereading4kids has a wealth of information on the latest publications with summaries of each story and an extract to read. Get lost in a book…..discover new worlds…..Feed that mind.

To All of Year 6

As SATS week arrives it is not quite the same,
The tests that were printed this year never came,
The displays all still up;walls full of maths ‘rules’,
But Year 6 is very different, at present, in schools.

For some of you, happiness, lots of relief,
For others a sign of pure disbelief,
That you worked really hard in advance of this week.
Expected and Greater Depth marks you did seek.

Algebra, fractions, the times table drills,
Inference, retrieval, in-depth reading skills,
Past present, progressive … and all the SPAG terms,
You’ve practised and mastered them over the years.

Fear not though, the SATS yes, won’t happen this term.
But remember tests don’t measure everything you learn.
Primary subjects are varied; you’ve always tried your best,
And many of those skills that you’ve gained can’t be defined by a test.

So, here at All Saints, you’ve made us so proud
We sit here with pride and we shout this out loud…
“Year 6 you amaze us, you’ve come incredibly far…
And we don’t need a test to see how amazing you are!”

Holocaust Memorial Day

On Monday the KS2 children had a special assembly to understand Holocaust Memorial Day. They were amazing, they listened well and some children gave very thoughtful and factual contributions. We talked about the word DISCRIMINATION and how no one should ever experience this in their lives because of their race, religion or beliefs.

The whole school then made a flame, each child has contributed to this to remind us to remember the 6 million people who suffered in The Holocaust.

Christmas Jumpers and Carols

Just to clarify. Tomorrow children can wear their Christmas jumpers with their school uniform. i.e replace school jumper for a Christmas jumper.

We are looking forward to seeing you at our Christmas Carols around the tree at 1.30pm.

Many thanks.

KS2 Production

Thank you to all our lovely family and friends who came to support our children this afternoon, it was a great success which saw the children speaking more confidently and showcasing their work.

Year 3 told us all about The Romans and their visit to The Tide and Time museum, Year 4 took rewrote the words to their song and created a conversation amongst themselves to rely their work this half term, Year 5 have completed some amazing art work on Van Gogh and finally Year 6 presented their work finishing off with Mr V’s singing group bravely singing so beautifully to us all.

Next half terms date should be published soon, we are looking forward to seeing you all again.

Meanwhile, don’t forget we welcome you into school for reading with your child every Thursday morning between 8.30 and 8.45am. It would be great to see more parents joining us.

Green Team Success

The Green Team have heard back from ESPO, the company who supplies schools and other organisations with glue sticks. Apparently they can be recycled as long as they are clean. The children have written to NNDC to ask if they put the clean glue sticks in the school’s green bin, that they will be recycled and not end up in landfill.

Green Team message – Toothpaste reminder

Good morning, please parents can you remind your children after they have used up their toothpaste tubes and brushes, as well as the brush heads from the electric toothbrushes, to please bring them into school so we can recycle them to raise money for our local church.

Many Thanks

Green Team.

Remembrance Day 11 Nov

The school will take part in the Act of Remembrance on Monday at Stibbard Parish War Memorial. Whatever the weather. If you would like to join us, please meet us there at 10.50.

Some of the children have asked if they can wear medals belonging to a family member who has served in the Armed Forces. If you are happy for your child to wear them, please help them to do so. They should be worn on the right.

Message from Green Team

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are going to send home a ‘Recycle with Michael’ bag. If you, a friend or family member are having a clear out of old clothes, please fill the bag and return it to school.

It will help us raise some money for our school and stop items going into landfill.

Please return unused bags to school.

Thank you.

The Green Team

Aldi vouchers

Please keep bringing in your Kit For Schools vouchers. As you can see from the photo below we’ve nearly completed one rather large poster and Year 6 have incorporated this into their fractions lesson today.
